Philco 70 Cathedral (1932)
(wood tube cathedral radio)

Philco 70 Cathedral (1932)

THIS RADIO HAS BEEN SOLD!

In 1931 for the 1932 model year, Philco came out with the models 70 (seven tubes), 90 (nine tubes) and later an eleven-tube set, the 16B. The model 70 was very popular, selling 300,000 sets. All of these early cathedral radios were designed by Edward Combs. To this day they are considered the quintessential cathedral design. The model 70 is a seven-tube, AM only radio. These early Philco cathedrals have great sensitivity and lots of volume. Blake replaced all of the capacitors. He checked resistors and tubes, replacing where needed. He also installed a pre-amp which allows us to use an external audio cable. Previously we could only install a cable that had little volume, and this pre-amp solved that problem. The cabinet is original. We just cleaned it up and left the original finish as it has so much character that it was too nice to strip and redo. We added a period-correct Philco grille cloth and the radio has it's original knobs. This is a wonderful, untouched finish Philco 70 that plays great! 18"H x 16-1/2"W x 10"D,
