Philco 70-A Baby Grande "Special" (1931)
(wood tube cathedral radio)

Philco 70-A Baby Grande "Special" (1931)

THIS RADIO HAS BEEN SOLD!

Philco's first Superheterodyne Cathedral Radio, the early version in walnut, restored, serviced and working strong. One of the most recognizable of all radio designs from that era. The two 1931 models 70 and 90 have become Philco's most collectible cathedral radios & was designed for Philco by Edward Combs, which has gone on to become one of the most well-known and iconic of all cabinet designs from the tube radio era. The model 70 covers the standard broadcast band from 550-1500kc and features a 7 tube, tone control, electro-dynamic speakerand back-lit dial. The cabinet was available in walnut or mahogany veneer. This early version "Special" designates a 25-40 cycle transformer. The extra large transformer runs cool at 60 Hz and pumps the power per research on forums, etc (can't find much documentation otherwise). This is the first of these chassis I have ever owned or seen. "Special" is factory marked it two different locations on the chassis. Strong player and looks great. The decals and tri-tube shield are all original. Nice clean & rust free chassis. The grille cloth is a correct reproduction. 18"H x 16"W x 10"D.
