Beautiful four-tube AM/police band "mini cathedral" model 194 by Grigsby-Grunow Majestic, about as stylish as they come. Quite difficult to come by, these are always popular among collectors due to the unusual Gothic design and compact size. Cabinet finish, wood knobs and copper dial face are all original. Only the grille cloth on the cabinet was replaced with the correct pattern. An extremely cramped chassis that required the removal of the power transformer and tuner just to replace components (some 20 components in all were replaced, including a new volume control/switch, filter and paper caps, a number of out of tolerance resistors, and new cloth line cord). Two of the four tubes are NOS, the other two tested very strong. The 89 year-old power transformer is fused for protection. Requires a long wire antenna for reception. Plays as well as can be expected for a finicky four-tuber with no AVC. The volume control is part of the antenna circuit, so the louder the volume, the stronger the stations will come in but it will blast if you go from a distant station to a local station (both hands are needed on the controls as you tune!). 14"H x 9-1/2"W x 6-1/2"D. |
