Croydon 549 (1937)
(wood tube table radio w/SW)

Croydon 549 (1937)

THIS RADIO HAS BEEN SOLD!

A rare brand, this five-tube, two-band set has many unique features. Among them, the smallest power transformer I've ever encountered on a radio chassis! I thought at first it was a choke or audio output transformer. It also features an unusual tube line up, including a 1-V rectifier! Features a small, yet elegantly designed cabinet with a bold large silver foil airplane dial surrounded by a polished escutcheon. Wood knobs and new grille cloth compliment the totally refinished cabinet, done with spray toners and topped with a clear spray of enamel for sheen and durability. There is some age-related crazing on the dial face but it does not detract from the overall appearance. All the graphics are intact. The chassis has been gone through with all new wax and filter capacitors, resistors changed as needed, a strong tested set of tubes, new line cord. The controls were cleaned and lubricated to make them move smoothly again. Requires its long wire to be attached to an external antenna source to receive stations. This is one of those circuits where the antenna is connected directly to the volume control, so the louder you turn the volume, the stronger the stations come in. There is no AVC, so you have to adjust the volume as you tune. As such, my standard add-on 3.5mm cord could not be installed on this unit. 17-1/4"W x 10"H x 7"D.
